Limited recovery in the labour market 2014-10-07

The negative tendency of the employment rate in the period 2012-2013 has during the first six months of the year 2014 come to a complete standstill. Nevertheless the economic growth still remains too limited in order to permit a real upsurge of the labour market. Compared to the same period of 2013 the salaried employment rate has barely changed in the second quarter of 2014 and only measured in terms of jobs there is a small increase, such as it appears from the statistics of the NSSO.

On June 30th 2014 the total number of jobs was 0.6% higher than a year before. However this increase is partly due to the number of temporary workers in the sector of education, for whom the measurement on June 30th is subject to calendar effects. The volume of labour which compared to 2013 has clearly risen during the first quarter of 2014 under the influence of the mild winter, has in the second quarter of 2014 remained at the same level as the one registered in the second quarter of 2013.

The global image remains the one of a partly improving labour market, which is characterized by a rise in the use of temporary agency work but which is also confronted with the effects of restructuring (amongst others in industry and in the financial services sector) and of a shrinking of the government budgets (amongst others in the building industry and in public administration).
